2023 Physician of the Year

The Northern Colorado Medical Society selected Jan Gillespie-Wagner, MD, as the 2023 NCMS Physician of the year. The Physician of the Year award is the society’s highest honor.

Dr. Gillespie is board certified in both anesthesiology and pain management. She supports a multidisciplinary team approach in caring for patients with spine pain. She performs procedures to diagnosis facet joint disease, steroid injections and radiofrequency ablations to alleviate pain. Spine procedures are performed using fluoroscopy.  

Dr. Gillespie has served the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) for the 15 years as a member of the Committee of Economics and as a delegate from the state of Colorado. She is past president of the Colorado Society 

of Anesthesiologists and served on the Northern Colorado Medical Society Board for 12 years and as treasurer for five years. She served on the Colorado Medical Society Board for four years in addition to many various CMS committees and continues to serve on the Committee on Value in Health.

Dr. Gillespie is president and medical director for the Northern Colorado Individual Practice Association (NCIPA) and Colorado IPA. NCIPA is a physician and allied health provider organization with 400 members in Colorado. 

Dr. Gillespie is the founder of Systems of Care Initiative, a community based 501(c)3 organization that provides advance care planning for people in Northern Colorado. Her personal journey with her family and friends has led her vision to ensure everyone has the ability to have their voice heard during a medical crisis.

Dr. Gillespie worked for two years with Colorado Senator Joann Ginal to help write and advocate for Senate Bill 19-073, which created a statewide registry for Advance Care Directives. The bill was passed and signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis in 2019.

 She is also the owner and president of CPS Healthcare Solutions, LLC (CPS). CPS provides administrative services to medical practices, medically related businesses and to non-profit organizations.  

Besides her interest in medicine and the business of medicine, Dr. Gillespie and her husband, Robert Wagner, own and manage a biotech company, Gene Check, which does genetic testing for animals and basic research in mutation detection. They live in northern Colorado on a cattle and sheep ranch and train and trial border collies.
